Speirs Locks

One of the highest profile and most visible locations in Glasgow, Speirs Locks has a second to none setting – located next to the canal and benefiting from an elevated position above the city, it has the potential to become a ‘Balcony for the City’, one that will attract crowds of Glaswegians and tourists alike. It is also home to Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland and GAMTA, (Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts), which means that there is a real prospect that the area will establish a creative energy and edge, something that will set it apart from the norm.

In response, we have prepared a Masterplan that combines art, water, landscape, views and contemporary architecture, all set around and responding to the platform provided by the impressive listed warehouses of Speirs Wharf. We believe this will provide a framework to encourage and inspire change in the area, a process that will lead to the place having as distinct a canalside identity as Camden or Castlefield.

The Masterplan was approved by Glasgow City Council on 12th December 2008. The first stage of delivery will be to improve links between the canal and the City Centre, which will take place in 2009. Central to the design are giant flowers, inspired by the former Phoenix Park that was lost to the area when the M8 was built. The Masterplan was awarded the British Urban Regeneration Association prize for Masterplanning & Strategy 2009.
