A prominent landmark in the centre of Maryhill could also become a symbol of regeneration.

We are keen to see the Whitehouse building brought back into use, to complement and support the regeneration of the canal. The building, which is owned by British Waterways Scotland, is an opportunity for future investment in Maryhill.

    The story so far

The former bar has occupied the site at Maryhill Road since before the Forth & Clyde Canal was completed in 1790.

During 2008 Glasgow City Council met with local organisations and consulted the community on future uses for the Whitehouse.  The preferred uses centred around using the building as a base for walks, cycling and paddlesports, and providing information on local history and wildlife and coming events both to visitors and the local community.  Unfortunately, no key tenant emerged then to take the project forward.  Funding was found however to re-roof the building and prevent further deterioration and then to carry out a basic fit out with toilet and kitchen facilities during 2010-11.

    Ready for the community

During delivery of Phase 2 of the Maryhill Locks/Botany housing development by Maryhill Housing Association, the contractor, City Building, will use the premises temporarily as a site base.  On completion of the contract, they will carry out further works to leave it in an appropriate condition for community use.
