Creative people thrive in creative places. Speirs Locks is quietly emerging as one of those neighbourhoods - a daring and distinct place, with culture, creativity and art at its heart.

Speirs Locks is well on its way to becoming Scotland's centre for creative and cultural production. The starting place was the presence of Scottish Opera and GAMTA; then premises were converted for National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland opened a new £6.3M campus to provide for its dance curriculum.

A former Glue Factory has become a pop-up gallery and artists' studio, playing host to exhibitions by the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow International.

    A creative neighbourhood

Next, The Whisky Bond will become a creative factory for Glasgow, a nerve centre providing a home to artists, a place for like-minded entrepreneurs to run a business, and an accessible venue and gallery for a wide audience to enjoy.

The ideas for change were developed following an extensive process of engagement with local residents, businesses and stakeholders from which a strategy called Growing the Place evolved. The approach focussed on opening up new links and connections to the canal whilst cultivating the vibe of a creative neighbourhood through high profile arts and public realm initiatives.

In 2009 the project won both the BURA (British Urban Regeneration Association) award for Strategy and Masterplanning and was selected by the Scottish Government as a Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI) 'Exemplar' project, to promote exemplars of how communities could live in the future.

Nothing more perfectly captures the spirit of this new neighbourhood than the 50 giant flowers that form the centrepiece of our transformation of the Cowcaddens underpass, connecting the area to the City Centre.
